Item Description
Bigger screens change how a game feels, and the Nintendo 3DS XL proves it. Nintendo made the displays about 90 percent larger than the original 3DS, giving the top screen a 4.88-inch diagonal, so the 3D effect has more room to breathe and busy games like Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate or the battle maps of Fire Emblem Awakening read far more comfortably.
The larger body also brought a bigger battery than the original model and a roomier grip that is easier on adult hands during long sessions. Everything else that makes the 3DS fun comes along: the 3D depth slider, the Circle Pad, the outer cameras for 3D photos, StreetPass and full compatibility with DS games.
That opens up a library that rewards patience. Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Pokémon X and Y, Bravely Default, Kid Icarus: Uprising and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask all live on 3DS, while the DS side adds Dragon Quest IX, Pokémon Black and White and dozens of other favorites.
In all black, the XL is about as low-key as Nintendo hardware gets, a clean, no-fuss design that lets the games do the talking. Pair it with a few favorite cartridges and it becomes a big-screen window onto two full generations of Nintendo handheld gaming, from the stylus puzzles of the DS to the stereoscopic worlds of the 3DS.
