Item Description

Ninja Gaiden Sigma does not ease you in. Within minutes of the opening chapter Ryu Hayabusa is cutting his way through a mountain fortress full of ninja, and the game is already asking you to block, roll and counter with the precision of a fighting game. That demand is the whole appeal. Team Ninja built a 3D action game around the idea that every enemy can kill you and every fight can be won through skill, and Sigma is its PlayStation 3 reworking of the 2004 Xbox game and its Ninja Gaiden Black expansion.

The story sends Ryu after the Dark Dragon Blade, stolen when his village is attacked, and into the Holy Vigoor Empire and the city of Tairon, where fiends, soldiers and towering bosses wait at every turn. Combat is built from a deep move set: the Izuna Drop, the Flying Swallow, Ultimate Techniques charged by absorbing essence, and Ninpo magic. Weapons range from the Dragon Sword to flails, a staff, a war hammer and the massive Dabilahro, and Sigma adds the twin katanas Dragon's Claw and Tiger's Fang. Muramasa's shop lets you upgrade gear between fights, and Mission Mode serves up self-contained combat challenges once the campaign is done.

The biggest change is Rachel, the fiend hunter, who becomes playable in her own chapters with a heavy, hard-hitting style that contrasts nicely with Ryu's speed. Sigma also reworks encounters, adds new boss fights and presents the whole adventure in high definition, giving one of the sixth generation's sharpest-looking action games a fresh coat for a new console.

The Greatest Hits label marks this as a PlayStation 3 release that sold well enough to earn Sony's budget reprint, a sign of how many players picked up the challenge. It is a fine way to hold onto the Sony-side version of a game that shaped the hardcore action genre alongside Devil May Cry, and it sets up nicely next to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 for anyone tracing Ryu's PS3 run.
