Item Description

Ninja Gaiden II was a ferocious, blood-soaked Xbox 360 game, and Sigma 2 is Team Ninja's reworking of it for the PlayStation 3, directed and produced by Yosuke Hayashi: a different balance, new heroines, new bosses and a co-op mode, all wrapped around one of the fastest and most demanding combat systems of its generation.

Ryu's arsenal is enormous, and every weapon changes the rhythm of a fight. The Dragon Sword, the Lunar staff, the Falcon's Talons, the Kusari-gama and the scythe each have their own combos, and Sigma 2 adds Enma's Fang, a heavy greatsword, along with the Howling Cannon. Combat runs on reading enemy patterns, punishing openings with long strings and soaking up essence to unleash Ultimate Techniques. Even ordinary enemy ninja are aggressive enough to overwhelm a careless player, which is exactly the point.

The story sends Ryu around the globe after the Black Spider Ninja Clan, with CIA agent Sonia caught in the middle and the Greater Fiends stirring behind it all. Sigma 2 adds three chapters for other heroines: Ayane of the Mugen Tenshin clan, Momiji with her naginata, and Rachel, the fiend hunter from the first game. Five new boss encounters join the roster, including a giant Buddha statue and a showdown with the Statue of Liberty, and the new two-player Team Missions were designed for co-op, with a computer-controlled partner stepping in when you play alone.

Purists still argue over the trade-offs. Sigma 2 replaces much of the original's gore with purple mist and puts fewer enemies on screen, though each one is tougher to bring down. In exchange you get the extra characters, the new fights and a polished PS3 presentation, and critics scored it highly on release in 2009. It is the PlayStation home of Ninja Gaiden II, and the only way to play Ayane, Momiji and Rachel's chapters on a PS3.
