Item Description

Three years before the events of the NES Ninja Gaiden, a young Ryu Hayabusa is already carving his way through New York City. Ninja Gaiden Shadow is set in 1985, with Ryu taking on Emperor Garuda, a would-be dictator whose army of soldiers, cyborgs and machines has the city in its grip. It gives Game Boy owners a prequel chapter of Tecmo's ninja saga, and it plays with a style all its own.

That is because the game has an unusual origin. Natsume, the studio behind the NES cult favorite Shadow of the Ninja, originally planned it as a Game Boy take on its own series. Tecmo picked up the project, reworked it with Ninja Gaiden's hero and released it as part of the Ninja Gaiden line, while Europe received it under the name Shadow Warriors. The result blends two of the NES era's best ninja series into a single cartridge.

The defining tool is the grappling hook. Ryu fires it upward to haul himself onto higher platforms and can hang beneath them, moving hand over hand across the ceiling, which gives every stage a vertical rhythm of slashing, climbing and dropping onto enemies below. His sword is quick and responsive, and power-ups collected from containers fuel the art of the fire wheel, a rising, spinning wheel of flame that hits harder than any sword strike and can be stocked for up to five uses. A six-unit life meter keeps the pressure on across five stages, each split into multiple sections and capped with a boss.

Ninja Gaiden Shadow is compact and focused, the kind of handheld action game built to be learned and mastered on the go. It is the only Ninja Gaiden adventure made for the original Game Boy, which makes it the missing piece for anyone following Ryu's story from the arcade and NES into the series' later reinventions, and an interesting curiosity for Natsume fans who know its Shadow of the Ninja roots.
