Kenji Mozu is not Ryu Hayabusa, and that is the point. With the master called away to America, it falls to his student to defend the Hayabusa village when demons pour through, and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound builds its whole adventure around that apprentice and an unlikely partner. Kumori, a kunoichi of the rival Black Spider Clan, ends up bound to Kenji after a deadly encounter, and the uneasy alliance between two enemy clans drives a story that runs alongside the events of the NES original.
This is a side-scrolling Ninja Gaiden in the classic mold, made by The Game Kitchen, the Spanish studio behind Blasphemous, and published by Dotemu with Koei Tecmo. Kenji handles the sword work up close while Kumori's kunai strike from range and hit distant switches, and the two styles feed into the game's smartest idea, Hypercharge. Enemies glowing with a blue aura must be cut down by Kenji, those glowing purple by Kumori, and landing the right hit stores a powered-up strike that can cut through tougher foes or stagger a boss. Add the Guillotine Boost, a well-timed bounce off an enemy for extra height, plus wall-clinging and screen-filling Ragebound Arts, and every stage becomes a chain of split-second decisions.
The pixel art is lush and full of motion, and the levels range across construction sites, sunken ships and harbor docks, often closing on a demanding boss fight. Each stage hides collectibles that fund upgrades at Muramasa's shop and sets three optional challenges that escalate from simple objectives to strict tests such as finishing without taking damage. Clear everything and a hard mode opens up with harsher layouts and more spikes, for players who want the full NES-era punishment.
Critics welcomed Ragebound warmly, singling out its visuals, smooth controls and sharp difficulty. It plays like a love letter from people who studied Tecmo's NES trilogy closely: tight jumps, relentless enemies and the hard-won satisfaction of finally clearing a stretch that has beaten you a dozen times. On Switch it works equally well in short handheld bursts or on the big screen, and Kenji and Kumori make a worthy new pair of heroes for a series that built its name on Ryu alone.
A brand-new side-scrolling entry to the NINJA GAIDEN series from the team behind Blasphemous, NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound redefines the classic platformer saga in a spectacular, thrilling and challenging ninja adventure.
