What was happening back at the Hayabusa village while Ryu was off in America avenging his father? Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound answers with a village in flames, overrun by Fiends, and the young ninja left behind to defend it. Kenji Mozu, Ryu's disciple, is defeated early and bound by an occult artifact to Kumori, a kunoichi of the rival Black Spider Clan. Two sworn enemies now share one body, and they have to work together to stop a demonic invasion.

Built by The Game Kitchen, the Spanish studio behind Blasphemous, and published by Dotemu, Ragebound returns the series to its side-scrolling roots in gorgeous, fluidly animated pixel art. Kenji handles close-range swordplay while Kumori strikes from a distance with kunai, and the Hypercharge system ties them together: glowing blue enemies fall to Kenji's sword, red ones to Kumori's projectiles, and defeating them the right way charges your next strike to cut down any non-boss enemy in a single blow. Deciding where to earn a Hypercharge and where to spend it turns each screen into a small, satisfying speed puzzle.

Movement is the other half of the thrill. Wall and ceiling climbing, a bouncing aerial strike off enemies, a fully invincible dodge and well-timed slashes that deflect projectiles give skilled players enormous control over every room. Secondary weapons such as sickles and grenades draw on Ki, Golden Scarabs hidden throughout the stages can be traded to Muramasa for talismans and new techniques, and a combo counter grades your runs all the way up to Master Ninja. Kumori-focused platforming sections and a motorbike run keep the pacing fresh, and the multi-phase boss fights reward experimenting with every tool you have.

Reviewers praised its speed, responsiveness and boss design, and its story slots neatly into the timeline of the NES trilogy without simply remaking it. Ragebound plays like a team of lifelong fans asking what an 8-bit Ninja Gaiden stage would feel like with modern animation, modern controls and the same unforgiving appetite for precision, then answering with some of the sharpest 2D action the series has seen.
