Ninja Gaiden 3 left a lot of longtime fans cold, and Razor's Edge is Team Ninja's answer: a re-tuned, re-armed version of the game that restores the blood, the weapons and the punishing depth the series is known for. It debuted on the Wii U in 2012, and this PlayStation 3 release brought the whole overhaul to Sony's console in 2013, along with the extra content that had been released for the original as downloads.
The difference is obvious in the first fight. Dismemberment is back, so a well-placed strike takes a limb and leaves a wounded enemy desperate and dangerous, and the cowering enemies and many of the quick-time cinematics that slowed the original are gone. Ryu is no longer stuck with one blade either. The Lunar staff, Dual Katanas, Kusari-gama, claws and the Eclipse Scythe give him a real arsenal again, and the Karma you earn in combat now pays for weapon upgrades, new techniques and extra health, so the game finally rewards you for fighting well.
Ayane gets chapters of her own, with a faster, flashier fighting style that changes the feel of the campaign, and the extras around the story push replay value well past the credits. The hidden Test of Valor stages, unlocked through crystal skulls, bring back enemies and bosses from earlier Ninja Gaiden games, and a set of challenge trials gives you something to sharpen your skills against long after the Regent of the Mask has been dealt with.
The plot about Ryu's cursed arm is largely unchanged, but the game wrapped around it plays the way Ninja Gaiden is supposed to play, which is why Razor's Edge is widely treated as the version of Ninja Gaiden 3 to own. On PS3, it is a satisfying way to keep that definitive release on the shelf next to Sigma and Sigma 2, completing the PlayStation 3 run of Team Ninja's modern Ryu Hayabusa games.
