Item Description
Ninja Gaiden 3 had something to prove when it came to Wii U. The original release divided fans by stripping back the weapon variety, gore and depth that defined Team Ninja's earlier games, and Razor's Edge is the studio's answer: a reworked edition that sharpens Ryu Hayabusa back into the most dangerous man in action gaming. On Wii U it was published by Nintendo, arriving in the console's first wave of games in 2012.
The story opens in London, where a terrorist group led by the masked Regent of the Mask demands Ryu's presence, and an early encounter curses his sword arm with the Grip of Murder, a living manifestation of everyone he has ever cut down. That curse gives the game an unusually introspective streak for the series, as Ryu fights through a plot involving the shadowy Lords of Alchemy while the weight of his past slowly consumes him.
Razor's Edge makes the combat far more demanding. Ryu gains six new weapon types and three new Ninpo, the dismemberment that made earlier entries so brutal returns, enemy AI is sharper and new enemy types fill out the encounters. Karma earned in battle now buys weapon and Ninpo upgrades, new techniques and extra health, adding the sense of progression the original lacked. Ayane steps in with her own exclusive chapters, weapons and Ninpo, and a Chapter Challenge mode lets you replay missions as either character. The GamePad's touch screen handles weapon selection, Ninpo and the combo list.
The result is a hard, fast and ferociously violent action game that rewards the precision Ninja Gaiden fans live for, and it is the version to play if you want to give Ninja Gaiden 3 a fair shot. It is also one of the more surprising pieces of the Wii U's early library, a mature, hardcore action game carrying Nintendo's name as publisher, and a fine neighbor for Bayonetta 2 on a Wii U shelf.
