Item Description
London, the Prime Minister's residence, and a masked man who already knows Ryu Hayabusa's name. Ninja Gaiden 3 opens with the Japanese Self-Defense Force pulling Ryu into a terrorist crisis, and early on the Regent of the Mask places the Grip of Murder on his right arm, a curse that swallows the Dragon Sword and feeds on the lives he takes. It gives the story an unusual weight for this series: every kill makes the curse stronger, and the curse is slowly killing him.
This was the first modern Ninja Gaiden made without Tomonobu Itagaki, and directors Yosuke Hayashi and Fumihiko Yasuda pushed toward something more cinematic. Steel on Bone moments drop into slow motion as Ryu's blade grinds through an enemy, the Kunai Climb sends him scaling sheer walls to strike from above, and once the cursed arm glows red he can charge a devastating ultimate attack. His Ninpo turns him into a giant fire dragon that clears the screen. Beside the campaign, Team Ninja built competitive and cooperative multiplayer for up to eight players.
Reviews were mixed. Critics felt the streamlining cost the series some of its famous depth, and Team Ninja answered with Razor's Edge, an expanded version that restored much of what had been trimmed. That history is part of what makes the original release interesting to own. It is the version that started the debate, with a more personal story built around JSDF officer Mizuki McCloud, her daughter Canna and the shadowy Lords of Alchemy, and a big-budget presentation that still moves at a furious clip.
On a PlayStation 3 shelf it sits naturally beside Sigma, Sigma 2 and Razor's Edge as the record of where Ninja Gaiden went after Itagaki, and the chance to judge for yourself whether the cinematic approach worked.
