Item Description
Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox has a reputation that arrives before you do, and it earns every word of it. Team Ninja's 2004 revival of Tecmo's classic series is fast, brutal and unforgiving, the kind of action game where a standard enemy can punish a careless attack and every boss is a test of what you have learned. Players who push through talk about it the way climbers talk about a summit.
Ryu Hayabusa's journey begins when his clan's village is slaughtered and the Dark Dragon Blade is stolen, sending him into the city of Tairon and the heart of the Vigoorian Empire for revenge. The combat is the star. The Dragon Sword is joined by weapons like nunchaku, a staff and a heavy flail, each with its own move list, and Ryu's ninja acrobatics let him run along walls, leap between enemies and finish them with techniques like the Izuna Drop. Ultimate Techniques reward you for absorbing the essence enemies leave behind, and Ninpo magic gives you a desperation tool for when the fight turns against you.
The difficulty is deliberate. Enemies block, dodge and gang up, and bosses such as the duel with Ryu's uncle Murai early on make it plain that button-mashing will not get you through. Every death teaches you something, and the moment the fighting system clicks, Ninja Gaiden becomes one of the most satisfying action games ever made. There is plenty to find beyond the main path too: collecting golden scarabs earns rewards from the shopkeeper Muramasa, including the original NES Ninja Gaiden games.
Ninja Gaiden later returned in the expanded Ninja Gaiden Black and the Sigma releases, but the 2004 original is where Tomonobu Itagaki's team rewrote the rules for 3D action games and set a bar the whole genre chased afterward. If you want to see where the modern Ninja Gaiden began, and test yourself against it on the hardware it was built for, this is the place.
