Item Description

Ninja Boy 2 is the follow-up to the original Ninja Boy, known in Japan as Super Chinese Land, and it carries Culture Brain's quirky Super Chinese series forward on the Game Boy. Released in Japan as Super Chinese Land 2: Uchū Dai-Bōken and in North America in 1993, it stars the ninja Jack and Ryu, heroes of the Little Ninja Brothers games, in a top-down action game full of eccentric enemies, hidden secrets and the kind of charming weirdness that defined a certain era of handheld gaming.

This time the threat comes from space. Aliens kidnap the dignitaries at an intergalactic conference and declare themselves rulers of the galaxy, and Jack and Ryu have to help the people of Futureland build a spaceship from scratch, landing on planet after planet to repair it while taking on the alien overlords and their lieutenants. Where the first Ninja Boy was a straight action game, the sequel layers in role-playing elements, giving it enough progression to keep things interesting well beyond a simple button-masher.

What makes Ninja Boy 2 stand out in the Game Boy library is its personality. The characters are expressive and the scenarios delightfully strange, capturing that early-'90s sensibility in which Japanese developers brought quirky concepts to Western hardware with total confidence. The combat has enough depth to reward players who take their time learning enemy patterns, the world is surprisingly expansive for a cartridge of its era, and the music is by Akinori Sawa. It is a small, lesser-known Game Boy release with genuine character, made for fans of early handheld action-RPGs.
