Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Nine Lives is a bargain with fate written on a card. For three mana it makes you immune to damage: hexproof keeps opponents from targeting it, and whenever a source would deal damage to you, that damage is prevented and the enchantment gains an incarnation counter instead. The catch is built into the name. At nine counters it exiles itself, and the moment it leaves the battlefield for any reason, you lose the game.
That tension is exactly what makes it fun to build around. Effects that stop counters from being placed, such as Solemnity, turn it into a permanent shield, while a well-timed donate effect can hand it to an opponent so the losing clause becomes their problem. Even played straight, it buys a combo or control deck nine hits' worth of breathing room, as long as you keep an eye on enchantment removal.
This is the Marvel Universe printing, collector number 3, a borderless mythic featuring comic art credited to C.F. Villa & Brian Reber, in foil, a dramatic way to show off one of Magic's riskiest enchantments.
