Aluche was ordered to sacrifice her closest friend, and she refused. That defiance drives Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon, Gust's follow-up to its gothic action RPG, set in a demon-haunted Western European city near the end of the nineteenth century. Ambushed and killed while guarding the kind-hearted priestess Liliana, then revived as an artificial half-demon by the shadowy New Curia, Aluche fights through endless nights to find a way to save the world without losing the girl at the center of it.
The biggest change from the first game is the Lily partner system. Instead of leading a full squad of summoned demons, Aluche heads out with one companion at her side plus up to two Servans. Landing hits on the same enemy as your partner builds toward a Double Chase attack, a Tension gauge powers sweeping Lily Bursts, and the affinity you build with each partner unlocks new skills and side stories. Some Servans clear the way, burning through thorns or lifting Aluche to higher ledges, while others transform into weapons such as a greatsword, a spear or a laser-firing mirror shield.
Every outing runs against the clock. Aluche can only venture out at night, each trip carries a time limit you can extend as she grows stronger, and returning to rest advances the phase of the moon. Defeating story bosses pushes the moon back, while letting a new moon arrive ends the game, so planning each night becomes part of the strategy. Between excursions, the Hotel Eterna serves as home base, where the cast unwinds and relationships deepen.
Reviews were mixed, with critics praising the cast and their dynamics while finding the structure grindy, and that cast is exactly the draw. From the studio best known for the gentle Atelier series, this is a darker, more romantic story built around devotion between women, wrapped in gothic atmosphere, and with multiple endings and New Game Plus it is made to be played more than once.
Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon takes place in a fictional, demon-ridden Western European city towards the end of the 19th century. The story focuses on a knight protector named Alushe and her two childhood friends – Liliana, a kind-hearted priestess, and Ruhenheid, a holy knight of the Lourdes Order. While guarding Liliana, Alushe is ambushed and killed only to later awaken as an artificial half-demon at the hands of the New Curia, a religious organization with dark ties. In the company of a variety of unlikely allies with their own pasts and agendas, Alushe’s strong desire to save Liliana gives her the strength to scatter the shadows shrouding the world and motivation to uncover the shocking truth behind the mysterious Queen of the Moon.
