Gust is best known for the gentle alchemy of its Atelier games, which makes Nights of Azure such a striking change of pace: a dark, fast action RPG about a half-demon knight, the demon familiars who fight at her side, and the friend she may be asked to lose.
Arnice is a holy knight of the Curia and something rarer besides, the only human ever to touch the azure blood of demons and survive, which left her part demon herself. She arrives on a demon-plagued island to fight the creatures that rule its nights, only to learn that her closest friend, Lilysse, has been chosen as the Saint whose sacrifice is meant to save the world. The bond between the two women is the emotional core of the story, and it gives every night's fighting a personal stake.
In battle, Arnice fights alongside Servans, contracted demon companions split between attackers and support types, and she can bring up to four of them into a fight. Her own light, heavy and special attacks fill a transformation gauge, and when it is full she can take on a demon form built around raw power and flame, a rabbit form built for speed or a phantom form that favors recovery. She can even shape her blood into weapons such as daggers and longswords, changing her moveset. Each night is a timed outing through the island's streets and corridors before Arnice returns to the Ende Hotel, her base for gearing up and taking on side requests.
The soundtrack by Kazuki Yanagawa, Daisuke Achiwa and Hayato Asano sets a brooding mood, and the anime-gothic art direction gives every night a moody, ornate beauty. Reviews were mixed overall, but its look, its music and the relationship between Arnice and Lilysse are what carried the series into Bride of the New Moon. This is where that world and its themes begin.
The game is set on the imaginary island-kingdom of Ruswal, where nights are plagued by Azure-blooded demons. Although it is dangerous for humans to leave their homes after dark, the brave knights known as the Curia are trained to fend off the ever growing threat. Among them is Arnice, a warrior of great skill and the protagonist of Nights of Azure. While she’s skilled with a blade, her talents aren’t just a product of her training. Arnice has some demon blood herself and is actually the only human that has managed to touch azure blood and survive! This event hasn’t left her unscathed and its thrilling implications become apparent quite early on; among others, it allows her access to a set of impressive abilities including the power to summon monsters to her aid in battle.
