Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Picture a black road, a trail of roadside pylons sliding out of the dark, and an oncoming car rushing at you out of the dark. Night Driver turns that sliver of information into a surprisingly tense ride. Atari's 1976 arcade original, led by Dave Shepperd, is regarded as one of the earliest first-person racing games; it drew the road as scaled white rectangles, let the night setting explain the minimal graphics, and represented your car with nothing more than a plastic overlay on the screen.

Rob Fulop's Atari 2600 version keeps the spirit and adds plenty. The road gains color, your car appears at the bottom of the screen, houses and trees line the route, and other cars come at you head-on. The paddle controller is the steering wheel and its red button is the accelerator, which makes Night Driver feel more like driving than most joystick racers of the era. There is no gear shifting to worry about, so every run comes down to steering and nerve, and a crash costs you precious seconds. Eight variations split between 90-second timed runs and untimed cruises, so you can chase a high score against the clock or simply settle in for a long drive through the dark.

It was a hit, landing among the console's top five best-sellers in 1980 and passing 1.9 million copies by 1983, and it was an early credit for Fulop, who went on to the 2600 Missile Command and Imagic's Demon Attack. Today it is a short, hypnotic score chase that shows how much atmosphere the early 2600 could wring out of a few moving blocks, and a strong reason to keep a set of paddle controllers next to the console.
