Few crossover ideas sound as gleefully strange as Nigel Thornberry trading blows with a Ninja Turtle while Reptar stomps toward Powdered Toast Man, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl commits to the bit completely. Fair Play Labs' platform fighter, published by GameMill in 2021, pulls twenty fighters from across decades of the network's animation: SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy from Bikini Bottom, Leonardo, Michelangelo and April O'Neil, Aang, Korra and Toph from the Avatar shows, Lincoln and Lucy Loud, Helga Pataki, Oblina, CatDog, Zim, Danny Phantom, and Ren and Stimpy as a tag team.
Underneath the cartoon chaos sits a real fighting game. The goal is the familiar one for the genre, building damage and knocking opponents clean off the stage, but the controls take their own route, with light, strong and special attacks and a dedicated strafe button that lets you hold your facing while you move. That single tool changes how spacing and combos work, and it is a big part of why fighting game players treated the game more seriously than anyone expected from a licensed brawler. Each character's move set leans into their show, and the stages are built from the same worlds, so matches feel like flipping between channels in the best possible way.
The game was pitched with rollback netcode for online play at launch, and it kept growing after release: Garfield and Shredder arrived as free downloadable fighters, Jenny Wakeman, Hugh Neutron and Rocko followed as paid add-ons, and a later update added voice acting to a roster that launched without it. Its success led to a full sequel, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, in 2023, which makes this original the starting point of Nickelodeon's own answer to Smash.
On the PlayStation 5 it is at its best as a couch game, the kind of four-player free-for-all where one person picks Oblina for the deep-cut joke and somebody else quietly learns to dominate with Lucy Loud. For anyone who grew up on Saturday-morning Nicktoons, there is real pleasure in seeing these characters treated as serious fighters, and the original roster's mix of 90s favorites and newer heroes is a time capsule all its own.
The largest collection of Nickelodeon characters ever assembled in a fighting game! Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl brings together your favorite Nickelodeon characters for one bombastic battle. With a power-packed cast of heroes from the top shows within the Nickelodeon universe, face-off with all-stars from SpongeBob Squarepants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Loud House, Aaahh!!!, Real Monsters, Avatar, The Wild Thornberrys, Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, and many more to determine ultimate dominance. With unique move sets and attacks drawn directly from their identifiable personalities, each character has its own style of play enabling endless hours of enjoyable action for Nickelodeon's legion of fans.
