Item Description

Within minutes of meeting Mr. Drippy, the Lord High Lord of the Fairies, with a lantern pierced through his nose and a broad Welsh accent, it is obvious that Ni no Kuni is not going to play like other RPGs. Level-5's adventure, made in partnership with Studio Ghibli, looks like a hand-drawn animated film you can walk around in. Ghibli contributed the animated sequences and character work, and Joe Hisaishi, the composer behind Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, wrote a sweeping orchestral score to match.

Oliver is a boy from Motorville, a small town with a 1950s American feel, whose world falls apart when his mother dies. His tears bring a stuffed doll to life, and that doll is Drippy, who tells him about another world where every person has a soulmate tied to someone in his own, and where the dark djinn Shadar has been draining people's hearts. Oliver sets out as an apprentice wizard, mending the broken-hearted by borrowing spare courage, kindness or enthusiasm from people who have plenty to give. It is a fairy tale about grief, told with the kind of sincerity Ghibli's films are known for.

Battles blend real-time movement with menu commands. Oliver fights alongside familiars, creatures that he and his companion Esther tame in the field, and each one can be fed treats, levelled up and metamorphosed into stronger forms, which turns collecting and raising them into a game of its own. The in-game Wizard's Companion, a full spellbook of lore, recipes, bestiary entries and runes, is the kind of world-building detail that makes the place feel lived-in, and some of the puzzles draw directly on its pages.

The game began life as a Japan-only DS title, and this PlayStation 3 version expanded and rebuilt it before Namco Bandai brought it West in 2013, where it became one of the most celebrated JRPGs of its console generation. It is a long, warm, gorgeously scored journey that shows what happens when an animation studio and a seasoned RPG developer meet halfway, and the PS3 is still the hardware it was made for.
