Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Ask hockey fans to name the greatest hockey video game ever made and you will hear one answer more than any other. NHL 94 earned that reputation on the Genesis in 1993, and the case for it is easy to make the moment the puck drops.

The signature addition was the one-timer, a shot fired straight off a pass, and it changed everything. Suddenly the game was about moving the puck, setting up the cross-ice feed and hammering it home before the goalie could slide across, the same instinct that drives real hockey. To keep forwards in check, defenders got harder body checks with new animations, and the option to control the goalie manually added a fresh challenge for players who wanted total command. Fighting, a fixture of the earlier games, was removed entirely, leaving a faster, cleaner game built around skating and scoring. Exhibition games, best-of-one or best-of-seven playoffs and a brand-new shoot-out mode cover the action, with adjustable period lengths, manual or automatic line changes and penalty settings.

It was also the first game in EA's series licensed by both the NHL and the NHL Players' Association, so real teams and real players finally shared the ice, right down to the 1992-93 rosters and the expansion Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Florida Panthers. The presentation is full of personality, especially the team-specific organ songs at the start of periods and after goals, like the Hartford Whalers' “Brass Bonanza.” Jeremy Roenick has credited the game with his own fame, since his digital double was among the most dangerous players on the ice.

The legacy speaks for itself. Boston.com ranked NHL 94 first among the greatest sports games, Electronic Gaming Monthly and IGN both placed it on their all-time lists, and EA revived the Genesis version as NHL 94 Rewind in 2020. Firing up the original cartridge on a Genesis is still the purest way to play the hockey game every one since has been measured against.

About the game

Aside from the licenses, the gameplay for this edition sees for the first time the inclusion of the devastating one-timer shot, but to keep forwards (literally) in check, defenders also feature harder body checks, with new animations. For an additional challenge, players can also choose to control the goalkeeper manually. A popular feature in previous editions, fighting is completely removed from the game. Game modes include exhibition games (or "regular season" in-game), playoffs (best of one or best of seven) and an all new shoot-out mode. The main options remain basically the same couple since the establishment of the series - period length (5, 10 or 20 minutes), line changes (off, manual or the new automatic mode) and penalties. (off, on, on but no offsides).
