Item Description
After seven years on EA's Ignite engine, the NHL series made the jump to Frostbite with NHL 22, and the difference shows the first time the arena lights come up. Developed by EA Vancouver with Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews on the cover, it set out to make the league's biggest names look and play like the stars they are, with sharper player likenesses, richer lighting and broadcast-style presentation that finally felt built for a new console generation.
The headline addition is Superstar X-Factors, an ability system that gives the league's elite players special traits tied to what they do best. Snipers, playmakers and power forwards each carry abilities matched to their real-life game, along with signature animations that make them feel different the moment they touch the puck. Because X-Factors apply across every mode, building your lines becomes a more strategic question than simply stacking the highest overall ratings.
There is a lot of hockey here. Franchise mode puts you in the general manager's chair, Be A Pro follows a single player's career, Hockey Ultimate Team is the card-collecting team builder, and World of CHEL was designed as the series' hub for custom players and pickup-style games online. Local split screen keeps the couch rivalry alive. The broadcast was rebuilt too, with a new commentary team featuring James Cybulski and Ray Ferraro, remastered goal horns and a crowd that reacts to the flow of the game, and on PS5 some goal horns, hits and voices play through the DualSense controller's speaker.
Critics were split on how far the on-ice gameplay moved forward, but NHL 22 marks the moment EA's hockey series changed engines and started over visually, which gives it a real place in the franchise's history on PS5. The cover choice aged well, too: Matthews went on to score 60 goals and win the Hart Trophy in the 2021-22 season that this game's rosters capture.
