Item Description

There is something poignant about NHL 2005. It arrived in September 2004, just as a lockout began that would wipe out the entire 2004-05 NHL season, which means EA's hockey game became the only place fans could play that year at all. Markus Naslund of the Vancouver Canucks is on the cover, and the rosters capture the league as it stood just before the long pause that would reshape it.

EA Black Box's headline addition was Open Ice Control, which lets you direct teammates without the puck. You can send a winger streaking for a breakaway pass, set up a give-and-go or call for a defensive double-team, and suddenly every shift has a layer of strategy beyond simply skating at the net. The other big draw is the World Cup of Hockey mode, which lets you build national teams from scratch and play in international venues across North America and Europe; thanks to an IIHF license, it is the only game in EA's NHL series to use real international jerseys.

Dynasty mode gives the long-haul players more to manage, with more interactive relationships between general manager and owner, delivered through a new in-game email system, alongside Season and Exhibition play for quick games or years of team building. Licensed NHL teams, players and arenas keep the presentation grounded, and the action feels fluid whether you are winding up a slapshot or clearing your own crease.

With split-screen support for head-to-head games on one TV, it is a fine way to spend an evening with a friend, and a fascinating time capsule for hockey fans: the last NHL season before the lockout, frozen on a GameCube disc.
