Item Description

Brett Favre designed the plays and Dan Marino is on the box, which is about as mid-'90s NFL as a football game can get. NFL Quarterback Club 97 was Acclaim's quarterback-flavored answer to Madden, built by Iguana Entertainment, the same studio that would soon make its name with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the Nintendo 64.

Its most interesting idea is the history. Alongside the usual preseason, regular season, playoff, Pro Bowl and Super Bowl modes, the game recreates famous situations from past NFL contests and challenges you to rewrite or relive them, and you can build and save custom scenarios of your own. An adjustable overhead camera and a reworked kicking meter round out the package, and Next Generation called the tackling system innovative.

Honesty matters here: reviewers in 1996 mostly preferred Madden NFL 97, criticizing the PlayStation version's lack of an announcer, its easy AI and slow-moving players. That makes Quarterback Club 97 less a lost classic than a revealing artifact of the licensing wars, when Acclaim, EA, Sony and Sega were all fighting over the same Sunday afternoon and every publisher had its own superstar quarterback.

Its appeal now is exactly that sense of place. The real teams and players of 1996, the Favre playbook and the historic-scenario mode make it a fun window into a season and a rivalry between games that very few people revisit, and a natural piece of a complete PlayStation football shelf.
