Item Description

Late hits are legal, pass interference does not exist and a first down takes thirty yards. Those three rules tell you everything about NFL Blitz, Midway's gleeful demolition of the serious football game. It started in arcades in 1997, and the PlayStation version carries the same attitude home: seven players a side, wide-open passing, and tackles that send ballcarriers spinning through the air long after the whistle should have blown.

Every play is a short, loud burst. You choose from a small playbook, hit the turbo button to burn past a defender and launch the ball deep, or crank the pass rush and flatten the quarterback before he can set his feet. Tim Kitzrow, the same voice who made NBA Jam so quotable, provides the commentary with all the volume the hits deserve. Real NFL teams and their star players are on the field, but nobody here is pretending to be Madden.

Blitz really comes alive with a friend on the couch. Games are short enough to run back over and over, the scoreboard swings wildly, and the pre-game code screen, where a quick combination of icons can unlock silly modifiers, became a schoolyard trading game of its own. It is the kind of multiplayer sports title that people who do not even follow football end up loving.

This is the original home version of the series that went on to Blitz 2000, Blitz 2001 and eventually Blitz: The League once EA locked up the NFL license. If you want the arcade energy of late-'90s Midway in its purest form, with the brutal hits, the shouting announcer and the thirty-yard first downs, start here.

About the game

NFL Blitz takes the idea of a normal football video game and turns it on its head with fewer players, bigger hits, and lots of personality.
