Item Description

Coins rain from the sky in New Super Mario Bros. 2, and that is the whole point. Nintendo built this 3DS sequel to the DS original around one outrageous goal: collecting a million coins. A running counter tracks every coin you have ever grabbed, and the game hands you tools to rack them up at a wild pace, from Gold Rings that turn enemies gold to the Gold Block that sprouts coins as Mario runs.

The star of the show is the Gold Flower. Grab one and Gold Mario throws golden fireballs that turn bricks, enemies and nearly anything else into a shower of coins. The Raccoon Leaf returns from Super Mario Bros. 3, letting Mario glide over gaps and whip enemies with his tail, and the Mega and Mini Mushrooms are back to open up secret routes. The Koopalings return as the bosses of Bowser's castles, and hidden exits lead to secret worlds that reward players who explore every corner of the map.

Coin Rush is where the coin theme pays off for experienced players. It strings together three courses from a chosen pack under a tight time limit with one life, challenging you to finish with the biggest haul possible, and it turns familiar stages into a speedrunning puzzle. The main game also supports two-player co-op over local wireless, with a second player taking control of Luigi on their own system.

It was also the first major Nintendo game released on the same day at retail and as a download, a small piece of history for the 3DS. As classic 2D Mario goes, it is a polished, bright handheld platformer that works equally well in five-minute bursts or long sessions, and the million-coin chase gives it a reason to keep coming back.
