Item Description

Most action heroes spend the whole game trying not to lose an arm. Bryce Boltzmann loses his constantly, and keeps fighting. NeverDead casts you as a demon hunter who has been immortal for some five hundred years, cursed by the demon king Astaroth, and the entire game is built around the fact that he cannot die. Take a heavy hit and his limbs go flying across the room. Lose an arm and you can no longer dual-wield or block; lose your legs and you are dragging yourself along. Lose your head and you roll it across the floor, hunting down your scattered body parts to snap them back on.

Developed by Britain's Rebellion and published by Konami in 2012, it pairs that body-horror slapstick with present-day city streets, a run-and-gun arsenal of unlockable firearms and the Butterfly Blade, a big sword swung with the right stick. Bryce can even tear off a limb and throw it. The environments are heavily destructible, and bringing a wall or a pillar down on a crowd of demons is one of its best tricks. His partner Arcadia plays the deadpan professional, and the story gets rolling when demons chase a pop star named Nikki Summerfield. Megadeth even recorded a song named after the game.

Critics were hard on it at launch, and the execution never quite matched the premise. That is exactly why NeverDead is worth a second look today: almost nothing else on the PS3 plays like it, and a hero who treats his own dismemberment as a combat tool is weird, funny and memorable in a way plenty of more polished shooters are not. It belongs on the shelf of anyone who collects the oddball experiments of that console generation, the ones a big publisher took a swing on and nobody has tried since.

About the game

NeverDead begins in the waking hours of peace and calm, when the world is under threat of being consumed by a demonic plague. Centuries have passed since the world succumbed to an unforeseen shadow of evil, and a hero was made an immortal by demons. These demons have risen once again in the present day causing unrelenting mayhem reinforced by destructible environments within the game. Now using his immortalic regenerative powers re-assembling his own body to evade death, the hero carries out the only salvation the world will know, for he is Never Dead.
