Night, wet asphalt, and a stock compact car that is about to become something else entirely. Need for Speed: Underground took a series known for exotic supercars on sunny highways and dropped it into the import tuner scene that ruled the early 2000s, arriving in the wake of The Fast and the Furious and capturing that moment better than any game of its era. EA Black Box rebuilt the franchise from the ground up, and the result changed what players expected from a racing game.
The garage is the heart of it. Underground built its identity around a garage mode for full customization, letting you turn a humble Honda Civic or Mitsubishi Eclipse into a personal statement with body kits, spoilers, hoods, rims, vinyls, neon underglow and brand-name performance upgrades. The Nissan Skyline and Toyota Supra wait further up the ladder as the cars everybody wants. Every part you add changes how the car looks under the city lights, and the pride of rolling out something nobody else has built is what keeps you grinding through events.
It was also the first in the series with a career that tells a story. You race through Olympic City, a sprawling, permanently nocturnal metropolis, climbing past rival crews in circuit races, sprints, lap knockouts, drift events and drag races. Drag is a game within the game: you steer only to change lanes while managing shifts by ear and by tachometer, and nailing a perfect launch is addictive. Your contact, Samantha, steers you into the scene as your reputation grows.
The soundtrack is a time capsule. "Get Low" by Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz with the Ying Yang Twins became inseparable from the game, joined by Rob Zombie, Petey Pablo and a run of hard rock and hip hop that sounded like every car meet of 2003. Underground was a massive hit, led directly to Underground 2 and set the tone for the series for years afterward. On the PS2, it is the tuner-era starting point: the game that made a generation of players care about neon, vinyl and nitrous.
Need for Speed: Underground is a 2003 racing video game and the seventh installment in the Need for Speed series. It rebooted the franchise, ignoring previous Need for Speed games that featured sports cars and exotics. Underground is the first game in the series to offer a career mode that features a comprehensive storyline, as well as a garage mode that allows players to fully customize their cars with a large variety of brand-name performance and visual upgrades.
