Item Description

The first thing you notice about Need for Speed Unbound is the art. Photoreal cars tear through the streets of Lakeshore trailing graffiti-style smoke, spray-paint wings and cartoon bursts every time you hit the nitrous, while the characters around them are drawn in a bold, cel-shaded style. Criterion Games, the studio behind Burnout and the 2010 Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, took the lead on the series again and gave it a look all its own.

The structure is built on risk. Over four weeks you race for the cash to cover entry fees and weekly qualifiers, chasing a spot in The Grand, Lakeshore's ultimate street race. Every event, day or night, raises your heat, and the cops grow more aggressive the hotter you run, but your winnings only count once you make it back to a safehouse. Stacking up a big night of races and then shaking a full police pursuit with the money still in your pocket is Unbound at its best. Burst Nitrous rewards drifting and near misses with short, sharp boosts, and the chases carry plenty of Criterion's Burnout attitude.

The story follows a young driver raised in mentor Rydell's garage, out to win back a stolen car and a broken friendship with Yaz, and Lakeshore is a fictional take on Chicago, with industrial districts, lakefront highways and tight downtown blocks. A$AP Rocky appears in the game and helped shape its global hip-hop soundtrack, and the customization runs deep, from engine swaps and body kits to your driver's own fits.

Unbound skipped the previous generation entirely and was made for current hardware, and its mix of street art and street racing makes it the most distinctive-looking Need for Speed in the series' long history, a stylish, high-stakes racer that plays as boldly as it looks on Series X.
