Need for Speed had spent a few years leaning toward serious driving; Hot Pursuit 2 is where it remembered that being chased is more fun. The premise is beautifully simple: some of the fastest cars on the planet, long scenic roads, and a police force willing to throw roadblocks, spike strips and helicopters at you to end the run. Get busted three times and the race is over, which turns every pursuit into a tense balance between flat-out speed and staying in one piece.

The PlayStation 2 version is the one to own. EA Black Box built it in Vancouver with the PS2 as its lead platform, separate from the EA Seattle versions on other systems, and it earned an 89 on Metacritic, the highest of all four releases. It also carries content the others lack, including desert courses modeled on Arizona's Sonoran Desert, complete with sudden monsoon thunderstorms, and mirrored versions of the tracks. It is generally regarded as the strongest version of the game.

The garage reads like a poster wall: the Ferrari F50, Porsche 911, McLaren F1 and machines from Aston Martin, Lotus, Corvette and more, over twenty exotics in all, with unlockable police variants of many. There is no story to sit through. Points come from laps led and finishing position, you spend them on new cars, and medals across the Championship and Hot Pursuit event trees open bonus races against the toughest opponents on the hardest courses.

Then the tables turn. In You're the Cop, you get behind the wheel of a pursuit car and run down speeders yourself, calling in spike strips, barricades, backup units and a helicopter to earn points for every arrest. It is a different game from the racer side, and swapping roles keeps the whole package lively. Even the soundtrack is flexible, with options to assign songs to regular races, pursuits or menus. For the purest version of the Hot Pursuit idea on the PS2, with every supercar and every siren intact, this is it.

About the game

The Need for Speed series returns, this time reverting back to the 'chase' arcade experience instead of a racing simulation. Top speed racing is the name of the game, where you must outchase not just the opposing drivers, but the cops. Choose from a selection of today's (and yesterday's) top sports cars, including the Ferrari F50, Porsche 911 and a range from the likes of Ford, Corvette, BMW, Lotus, Mercedes, Aston Martin, the McLaren F1 and a lot more. The competitive race mode allows you to take on other drivers and beat them to the line. A selection of tracks allows you to not only dodge incoming traffic, but perform deadly jumps and stunts to receive points. These points, combined with the points recieved from your finishing position, can unlock new cars and tracks. The Hot Pursuit mode combines all the major elements of the competitive mode with the chance to out run the cops. They will throw everything at you to try and stop you, including running you off the road, setting up road blocks and unleashing an attack helicopter equiped with missiles. Three busts by the cops ends the race.
