Item Description

Need for Speed: Carbon picks up where Most Wanted left off, and your return to Palmont City goes wrong almost immediately. Sergeant Cross, the cop from the previous game and now a bounty hunter, runs you down on the way into town, and the crews who remember why you left are waiting. The tenth Need for Speed moves the action into the hills and the night, and swaps lone-wolf street racing for crews and turf.

Canyon duels are Carbon's signature. Two cars, a twisting mountain road and a lot of empty air beyond the guardrail: in the first leg you chase the leader and score points for staying close, then the roles swap and you have to hold them off. Get past the leader and stay ahead long enough and you win outright, but one misjudged corner over the edge ends it instantly. Few racing modes of the era put this much pressure on a single line.

Your crew changes how races play. Wingmen ride along in specialized roles, blockers who take out rivals, drafters who give you a slipstream and scouts who find shortcuts, while the city is carved into territories you win district by district before facing each crew boss: Kenji, Angie and Wolf, and finally Darius himself. Cars fall into three classes, tuner, muscle and exotic, each with its own handling personality, and the customization suite covers body kits, vinyls and performance parts. The Collector's Edition was EA's premium release of the game, adding extra cars, pre-tuned versions of existing rides, new races and challenge series and additional vinyls to the game itself.

Carbon closed out the street-racing run that defined mid-2000s Need for Speed, from Underground through Most Wanted, before ProStreet took the series to closed tracks. On PS2 it is the moodiest, most nocturnal of that run, and if Most Wanted is on your shelf, Carbon finishes the story.
