Item Description

Raymond Felton on the cover tells you exactly when this game comes from. Months after leading North Carolina to the 2005 national championship, the Tar Heels' point guard became the face of EA Sports' college basketball series, and NCAA March Madness 06 captures that era of the sport: real schools, conference rivalries and the bracket chaos that makes college hoops feel nothing like the NBA.

EA Orlando's big addition this season was the lockdown stick, a dedicated defensive control for pressuring ball-handlers and forcing turnovers, paired with smoother passing on the other end of the floor. The game also leans into the emotion of the college game. Your senior captain can fire up the team and the home crowd, and a raucous building can rattle opponents into mistakes, a small idea that does a lot to make road games feel hostile and home games feel like a real advantage.

The long-term draw is Dynasty mode, where you build a program season by season. This year added junior college recruiting, letting you plug holes with JUCO transfers instead of waiting for freshmen to develop, which brings a welcome layer of roster strategy to the recruiting trail. College Classics offers a different kind of fun, dropping you into up to 20 great games from college basketball history so you can repeat what happened or rewrite it entirely. Reviews were generally favorable, and IGN in particular rated the Xbox version highly.

There is also a historical angle that grows more interesting every year. EA's college basketball series came to an end with NCAA Basketball 10 in 2009, which makes the mid-2000s March Madness games a snapshot of a genre that has been largely absent since. This one preserves the 2005–06 college game and EA's sixth-generation hoops design in full swing, and on the original Xbox it is still an easy, satisfying way to build a dynasty and chase a title in March.
