For eleven years, if you wanted to run a college football program on a console, this was the disc. NCAA Football 14 was the final release in EA Sports' long-running series before the license and the fight over college athletes' name and likeness rights brought it to a halt, and it spent the long wait until College Football 25 as the game fans kept returning to, with rosters, dynasties and fight songs intact.

It earned that loyalty on the field. Developed by EA Tiburon in Orlando, NCAA 14 brought the Infinity Engine 2 physics system over from the Madden side, so tackles, broken arm-tackles and pile-ups play out with real momentum instead of canned animations. Just as important, the option game was rebuilt to reflect how college offenses were actually being run, giving the read option, triple option and pistol formations the speed and decision-making that made them so dangerous on Saturdays.

Dynasty mode is where most players lived, and this entry streamlined it. Power Recruiting replaced much of the old phone-call grind with a faster system of pitching prospects on what your school offers, while new coach skills let you grow your program and staff over many seasons. Road to Glory lets you take a single player from high school recruit to campus star, and the stadium atmosphere, from band chants to rivalry trophies, gives home games that distinctly collegiate energy. Denard Robinson, the electric Michigan quarterback, won the fan vote for the cover.

Because the series stopped here, NCAA 14 became something rare for an annual sports game: a time capsule that never went stale. It captures the 2013 college football landscape just before the playoff era, and it is still a superb way to build a dynasty from a small-conference underdog into a national champion on Xbox 360, playing solo or head to head on the couch.
