Games to 21, win by two, no refs and no shot clock. NBA Street took the NBA license out of the arena and onto the blacktop, and the result was the most purely fun basketball game on the young PlayStation 2. It arrived under EA Sports BIG, the label behind SSX, and you can feel that family resemblance in every possession: style is part of the scoring system.

It plays three-on-three, with inside buckets worth one and shots from beyond the arc worth two, and the trick button turns every touch into a performance. Chain crossovers, behind-the-back passes and off-the-backboard alley-oops to fill the trick meter, then unleash a Gamebreaker, a guaranteed cinematic shot that adds to your score and takes points off the other team's, often flipping a close game in a single play. A streetball MC works the mic, calling your moves in full playground slang.

The single-player journey has you create a baller and tour famous courts across the country, from Venice Beach to a snowy blacktop on Beacon Hill to the legendary Rucker Park, beating NBA squads and either recruiting their players or banking points to build up your own. Each region is guarded by a Street Legend, among them the bruising Biggs, sharpshooter Drake, the 7'8" Takashi, high-flyer DJ, the tough little Bonafide and Stretch, the Dr. J-inspired cover star who holds court at Rucker Park. Beat them and they join your squad, and Michael Jordan waits among the unlockable legends.

Critics loved it, it sold well over a million copies on PS2 in the U.S. alone, and it kicked off a series that ran through Vol. 2, V3 and Homecourt. The Greatest Hits label was Sony's reissue line for its biggest sellers, which says plenty about how many living rooms this game took over. Hand a friend the second controller and it still turns into a trash-talking evening.

Create your own cool characters, and earn great new stuff for them as you unlock new courts and teams while taking on streetball and NBA legends. Beat a team in the tournament mode, and you have the option of adding its players to your roster, which will help as you advance up the ladder. You can also take on a friend in the two-player mode.
