Item Description
Two-on-two, sky-high dunks and a pace that never lets up: Midway's arcade basketball formula is pure late-90s swagger, and NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC wrapped it in the branding of the network that defined the decade's NBA broadcasts. The arcade original picked up where NBA Jam and NBA Hangtime left off, trading five-on-five realism for showmanship, with real NBA teams, plenty of shoving, and the booming voice of announcer Tim Kitzrow calling the action.
This Game Boy Color edition shrinks that formula onto the handheld. It is a stripped-down take on the arcade game, built around short, pick-up-and-play matches with real NBA teams, where steals, fast breaks and big finishes at the rim matter more than playbooks and rotations. It was a tall order for an 8-bit portable, and the fun is in seeing Midway's loud, flashy style squeezed down to a D-pad and two buttons.
The real pull is nostalgia. NBA on NBC was the soundtrack of 1990s basketball, with John Tesh's “Roundball Rock” opening the big games, and Midway's arcade hoops were the loudest way to play along. As a pocket-sized souvenir of Midway's sports line and turn-of-the-millennium NBA hype, it is a quirky, fun piece of that era.
