Item Description

Three players a side, rims begging to be torn down and an announcer losing his mind every time someone catches fire: Acclaim's 2003 NBA Jam is a loud, unapologetic attempt to bring early-'90s arcade swagger back to the hardwood. After a run of entries that drifted toward simulation, Acclaim Studios Austin returned the series to fast, exaggerated pick-up-and-play basketball, then shook up the formula by moving from the classic two-on-two to three-on-three.

The centerpiece is the Legends Tournament, a trip back through the NBA's eras in which you take on the best squads from each period head to head. Every team you beat adds its players to your pool, so the run slowly turns into a cross-decade dream-team draft built from more than 50 all-time greats, while the present-day side of the game is drawn from the 2003–04 season. Build up the Jam Meter and you can unleash one of more than 40 Monster Dunks, the outrageous, gravity-ignoring slams the whole game is designed to show off, and a long list of unlockable teams, courts and cheats keeps you playing well after the tournament is done.

Presentation is half the fun. Tim Kitzrow, the voice of the original NBA Jam, is back on play-by-play, and funk legend Bootsy Collins joins him in the booth, about as perfect a pairing for this series as anyone could have dreamed up. The soundtrack swings from Chuck Berry and King Floyd to rock and hip-hop, a mash-up that matches the game's anything-goes energy.

Critics at the time were split, and plenty of reviewers missed the tighter two-on-two format. That history is part of the appeal now. This was Acclaim's final NBA Jam, the last word from the publisher that first brought the series home to consoles in the 1990s, before EA revived the name years later. It is an oddball, big-hearted chapter of a famous franchise, and the kind of basketball game where nobody needs to know a playbook and the dunks only get bigger.
