Charge your turbo meter by spelling out H-O-U-S-E, hold every shoulder button, throw yourself an alley-oop, and tear the rim clean off the backboard to end the match on the spot. That move, Bring Down the House, tells you everything about NBA Ballers. Midway's 2004 one-on-one streetball game is pure spectacle, built on the same instinct for showmanship that gave the world NBA Jam.
Most games are one-on-one duels, with room for a third player to jump in for a three-way free-for-all. A round goes to the first player to reach 11 with a two-point lead, matches are best of three, and style is as important as scoring. Crossovers, flashy dribbles and acrobatic dunks build up a jackpot that you cash in by putting the ball through the hoop, and Midway's trademark on-fire state is back for whoever gets hot.
The roster runs to dozens of NBA players, from Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson and Vince Carter to Kevin Garnett and a young Yao Ming, plus a deep bench of legends including Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Bill Russell and Jerry West. The Rags to Riches story mode follows an unknown baller climbing tournament ladders toward legend status, wrapped in the bling-heavy, cars-and-jewelry lifestyle of mid-2000s hip-hop culture, with the fictional analyst Bob Benson and MC Supernatural setting the tone.
Critics liked what they saw, with an 82 on Metacritic for the Xbox version and an Interactive Achievement Awards nomination for Console Action Sports Game of the Year. It launched a short-lived series that continued with Phenom and Chosen One, and this first game is the pure, uncut version of the idea: two players, one ball and an absurd amount of swagger, best enjoyed with a friend on the couch.
