Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Item Description
No five-on-five, no fast breaks, no referee. NBA All-Star Challenge strips basketball down to the parts that fit perfectly on a Game Boy screen: one star, one hoop and the shot you have to make. Beam Software, the Melbourne studio behind a long run of LJN licensed games, built it around the kind of contests you would find at an All-Star Weekend or a schoolyard after dark.
The headline mode is straight one-on-one, alternating possessions against an NBA star of the era. Around it sit the side games that give the cartridge its staying power: a free-throw contest, a long-range shooting contest that is all rhythm and release timing, and H.O.R.S.E., where every shot you sink has to be matched from the same spot. A tournament format strings the matchups together, turning a quick handheld session into a bracket to climb.
It is a smart way to bring an NBA license to 1990s handheld hardware, focusing on shooting and head-to-head play instead of trying to cram a full team onto the screen, and the formula worked well enough that LJN followed it with NBA All-Star Challenge 2. If you are building out the Game Boy's sports library, or remember the league in its early-nineties prime, it is a compact, easygoing time capsule of that era.
