With Kevin Garnett on the cover, fresh off Boston's 2008 championship, NBA 2K9 captures the league at a vivid turning point: Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen as reigning champions, Kobe Bryant's Lakers looking for revenge, LeBron James carrying Cleveland and a rookie class led by Derrick Rose just arriving.
Visual Concepts built 2K9 on the foundation that had already made 2K the critics' choice in basketball, then sharpened the presentation with improved faces, skin and eye movement, better uniforms, more convincing crowd reactions, multi-angle replay packages at the end of each quarter and championship celebrations when you win it all. Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg call the action with Cheryl Miller on the sideline, a broadcast trio that gives every game a real television feel.
The heart of it is The Association, the franchise mode overhauled for this edition into what Game Informer called the series' deepest yet, with seasons of trades, drafts and roster management to work through. Quick games, mini games and create-a-player tools round it out. The game was also built around Living Rosters, which updated player ratings to reflect real-world performance during the season, along with newly added five-on-five online play. The soundtrack mixes 24 licensed songs from artists including the Beastie Boys, N.E.R.D., Santigold, The Meters and The Pharcyde.
The Xbox 360 version drew the best reviews of any platform, the game earned a Sports Game of the Year nomination at the Interactive Achievement Awards, and it sold more than two million copies. Today its appeal is the time capsule: a fully licensed 2008-09 season you can pick up and replay, the Big Three against Kobe, on the hardware it was made for.
