Item Description
What happens when one of America's great filmmakers writes a basketball video game? NBA 2K16 answered that with “Livin' Da Dream,” a MyCAREER story written and directed by Spike Lee. Your player, known as Frequency Vibrations, is a Harlem kid with a gift, and the story follows him from high school phenom through a college program of your choosing and into the NBA Draft, with family pressure, friends with their own agendas and plenty of Lee's New York energy along the way. Some players found it too tightly scripted, but no sports game had tried anything quite like it.
On the court, Visual Concepts kept refining what made 2K the reference point for basketball sims, with smoother movement and more lifelike player articulation. The broadcast presentation is rich: Kevin Harlan calls the action with Clark Kellogg and Greg Anthony, Doris Burke reports from the sideline, and Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith host the pregame, halftime and postgame shows. The soundtrack runs about fifty songs, split into playlists curated by DJ Premier, DJ Khaled and DJ Mustard.
The modes go deep. MyGM and MyLEAGUE let you run a franchise season after season, twelve new classic teams join the lineup, from the 2000-01 Lakers to the 2007-08 Celtics, and EuroLeague clubs like Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow add international flavor. 2K16 also introduced 2K Pro-Am, a five-on-five team mode with custom logos, jerseys and courts, though like the game's other online features it was built for its own era of 2K servers.
Stephen Curry, James Harden and Anthony Davis were the game's three cover athletes, a snapshot of the league just after Golden State's first title of the Curry era, and the launch rosters freeze that 2015-16 season in place. NBA 2K16 was the fastest-selling game in the series at the time and drew strong reviews, which makes it a fun one to revisit for the Splash Brothers' rise, or for living out Spike Lee's version of the hoops dream on Xbox One.
