Kevin Durant had just been named league MVP when he landed the solo cover of NBA 2K15, and the game behind him is a confident second swing at the PlayStation 4 generation. Visual Concepts added thousands of new animations, new defensive AI, team-specific play sets and more control over rebounds, steals and blocks, so possessions feel less scripted and more like real basketball.
The change players noticed first was the shot meter, a gauge that shows exactly how well you timed each jump shot. It made the series' famously finicky release points far easier to learn, and critics singled it out as a smart addition. Presentation took another step as well: Ernie Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal host the pregame and halftime analysis, and Pharrell Williams curated a soundtrack that runs from A Tribe Called Quest and Depeche Mode to Lorde and The Strokes. The game was also built to let players scan their own faces onto a created player with the PlayStation Camera, one of its most talked-about features at launch.
For franchise fans, 2K15 debuted MyLEAGUE, a deeper, more customizable take on running an entire league, while MyCAREER put a created player under the mentorship of Doc Rivers, with voiced conversations and press conferences adding role-playing touches. With its 2014 to 2015 rosters, Durant in his prime and a well-loved soundtrack, it is a vivid snapshot of a league in transition and a fun local head-to-head on the couch.
