Item Description

Rucker Park on a Dreamcast was a big deal in 2000. NBA 2K1, the second entry in Visual Concepts' basketball series, took the game outdoors for the first time, adding famous street courts such as The Cage, Rucker Park, Franklin Park and Goat Park alongside the full NBA season, with rapper Redman making an appearance. It was also the first NBA 2K built for online play through the Dreamcast's modem, which made it one of the first console sports games you could play over the internet. That service shut down long ago, but the ambition is a big part of this game's place in history.

On the hardwood it plays smoother and smarter than the original. A franchise mode arrived for the first time, along with historic players dating back to the 1950s, extra camera angles and a much-needed juke move to go with the crossovers, post-ups and alley-oops carried over from NBA 2K. The commentary is more varied, teammates encourage the shooter at the free-throw line, and the series' distinctive free-throw system, aiming with the Dreamcast's analog triggers, made the jump too, for better or worse. Reviewers at the time still rated it the best basketball game around.

Published under the Sega Sports banner while EA sat the Dreamcast out, NBA 2K1 helped make Sega's 2K line the backbone of the system's sports library, and the NBA 2K name is still going strong as a yearly series more than two decades later. This is the Sega All Stars edition, the Dreamcast's re-release line for its best-selling games, and owning it sealed means holding a piece of the moment basketball games first went online and onto the playground.
