Item Description

Imagine a stage you can revisit in different seasons: plant a seed there in spring, shift the world to summer and come back to find fruit waiting to be picked. That idea sits at the heart of Nayuta no Kiseki, Nihon Falcom's 2012 PSP action RPG, and it makes for some of the most inventive level design in the company's catalog.

You play as Nayuta Herschel, a young aspiring researcher living on Remnant Island, where fallen shooting stars have piled up for generations. When Noi, a fairy from a phantom world called Lost Heaven, arrives after the villain Zechst takes her Master Gear by force, Nayuta and his childhood friend Cygna are drawn into a quest to save her world and possibly their own. Combat is fast and real-time in the vein of Falcom's Ys and Zwei games: Nayuta handles sword attacks, jumps and dashes while Noi backs him up with Gearcraft magic, powerful limited-use elemental attacks that can paralyze or poison enemies and grow stronger the more you use them. Between fights, the stages lean hard into platforming, with hidden items tucked away for players who explore.

Each stage hands out up to three stars for objectives such as clearing it and finding all of its hidden items, and handing those stars to an ally on Remnant Island unlocks new techniques, from longer combos to dodges and blocks. Insects, fossils and relics you uncover can be donated to the island's museum until its exhibits fill up, and the bosses are enormous creatures and machines that make the most of the game's kinetic stages. Falcom Sound Team jdk backs it all with catchy, high-energy music.

Nayuta no Kiseki was the first Kiseki game to drop The Legend of Heroes name, with an entirely new setting, cast and system. This PSP version never left Japan; the game only reached English-speaking players in 2023 as the remastered The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails. The original UMD is the game as Falcom first released it, a striking import for anyone following the Trails series back to its more unusual branches.
