Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact cartridge. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Namco wrote a huge chunk of arcade history before the DS ever flipped open, and this cartridge gathers a remarkable slice of it: Galaxian, Pac-Man, Galaga, Xevious, Mappy, The Tower of Druaga and Dig Dug II, plus a full port of the four-player Pac-Man Vs. Play long enough and Super Xevious and an older version of Dig Dug II unlock as well.

The emulation came from M2, the studio retro fans trust with exactly this kind of work, and it shows in the options. Each game can be tuned for display, difficulty and orientation, including a vertical mode that turns the DS on its side to recreate the tall screens of the original cabinets. A hardcore mode goes further, letting you flip DIP switches on a simulated arcade board the way an operator once would. There is a sound test for every song and effect, a museum section packed with descriptions, screenshots and promotional material for each title, and new music from composer Manabu Namiki tying the presentation together.

The lineup rewards curiosity. Galaga and Pac-Man are as sharp a quick-session fix as handheld gaming gets, but the deeper cuts are where this collection earns its keep. Mappy's bouncing police mouse and trampoline-laced mansion still charm, Xevious helped define the vertical scrolling shooter, and The Tower of Druaga, a famously cryptic maze adventure that was a sensation in Japan, is a rare chance to see a game the West mostly missed. Dig Dug II trades the original's underground tunnels for islands you split apart and sink into the sea.

Then there is Pac-Man Vs., the Shigeru Miyamoto-designed GameCube party game in which one player is Pac-Man and the others hunt him as ghosts. On DS it runs over Download Play, so a single cartridge can host the whole group, which makes it a fantastic party trick to keep in your DS case. Few handheld collections treat their source material with this much care.
