Item Description

On paper, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon sounds like a fever dream. A troupe of theatrical villains called the Peach Mountain Shoguns has turned Oedo Castle into a European-style fortress, complete with a giant laser, and plans to make all of Japan their stage and its citizens their dancers. Standing in their way are a blue-haired ninja armed with a kiseru pipe, his gluttonous best friend, a mechanical ninja who loves hot baths, and a giant robot named Impact with a theme song worthy of a Saturday-morning anime.

Under the comedy sits a real 3D action-adventure. You roam feudal Japan from Oedo Town and Zazen Town to Festival Village, the Dogo hot springs and Kyushu, switching between Goemon, Ebisumaru, Sasuke and Yae at the press of a button. Goemon swings his kiseru and later a chain pipe recovered from Mt. Fuji, Sasuke throws kunai, Yae wields a sword, and Ebisumaru learns a shrinking spell that lets him squeeze through tiny gaps. Towns are safe havens where you eat at restaurants, rest at inns and stock up on riceballs and armor, and the abilities you earn along the way keep opening up more of the map.

Then come the castles. Ghost Toys Castle with its giant pool table, the Festival Temple, the Gourmet Submarine and the Gorgeous Music Castle each end with a boss, and victory often cues the game's signature set piece: a full musical number, a high-speed rampage in which Impact smashes through buildings to fuel up, and then a first-person robot brawl of punches, kicks, chain-pipe swings and bullets fired from Impact's nose. Three vocal songs, including Ichirou Mizuki's “I Am Impact,” sit alongside a score that blends the shamisen and other traditional Japanese instruments with modern ones.

Developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka, it launched in Japan in August 1997 as Ganbare Goemon: Neo Momoyama Bakufu no Odori and reached North America in April 1998, only the second Goemon game to come West after the Super NES Legend of the Mystical Ninja. The camera can be stubborn and the English script is famously odd, though the oddness only adds to the surreal humor. It is the closest thing the Nintendo 64 has to an anime you can walk around in, and the clearest explanation of why Goemon's fans are so devoted.

About the game

The story follows Goemon's struggles to prevent the Peach Mountain Shoguns gang from turning Japan into a Westernized fine arts theater. The plot calls for three cinematic musical features and battles between giant robots; like other Ganbare Goemon games, it is peppered with surrealist humor and anachronisms. The protagonist of Mystical Ninja is Goemon, a hot-blooded, kiseru-wielding ninja with blue, bushy hair based loosely on the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon. The lord of Oedo asks him to find those who maimed Oedo Castle. Goemon lives in Oedo Town and is friends with Ebisumaru, a strange, gluttonous fat man who wears a blue bandana. Ebisumaru is defined as lazy and perverted. Their kunai-throwing friend Sasuke is a mechanical ninja (made by the Wise Man of Iga) who enjoys hot baths and Japanese tea. Rounding out the heroes is Yae, a fierce sword-wielding kunoichi, who happens upon Goemon's band in Zazen Town. The villains of the game hail from the organization Peach Mountain Shoguns and include a gang of four "weirdos" led by Spring Breeze Dancin' (Danshin Harukaze) and Kitty Lily (Margaret Ranko). They intend to transform Japan into a stage for their talents.
