Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Feudal Japan, the far future and speed metal collide in M.U.S.H.A., and the result is every bit as loud as it sounds. Compile's vertical shooter, released in Japan as Musha Aleste, puts you in the cockpit of a samurai-styled mech in the year 2290, with the pilot Terri at the controls and the supercomputer Dire 51, built by humans, now attacking Earth from space.

Compile's shooter pedigree shows in the weapon system. Collecting Power Chips upgrades your main gun, and every third chip adds a drone, up to two at a time, in the spirit of Gradius's options. The twist is control: the drones can be switched between six attack modes, among them firing forward, firing behind and orbiting around your mech, so you are constantly reshaping your firepower to fit the waves coming at you. Three special weapons, a piercing laser, fire-based explosives and a rotating shield, grow stronger each time you grab the same type again, which rewards committing to a loadout and learning to use it well.

Then there is the soundtrack. Toshiaki Sakoda's score is driving speed metal, and it pushes the Genesis sound chip with the same aggression the game asks of your trigger finger. Paired with lush parallax scrolling and dense mechanical enemy designs, it gives MUSHA an energy few shooters on the system can match.

Seismic Software brought it to North America in 1991. Reviews at the time were mixed, with critics admiring the graphics but calling it short and familiar, yet the retrospective verdict has swung firmly in its favor, citing exactly that challenge, music and art. Later re-releases on the Wii Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online introduced it to new players, but the original cartridge is the way to hear that metal score on the hardware it was written for.
