Item Description

Muramasa Rebirth is the 2013 PlayStation Vita edition of Vanillaware's acclaimed action RPG Muramasa: The Demon Blade, published in English by Aksys Games and celebrated for its striking hand-painted visuals and fluid, fast-paced combat. Set in a mythological version of Japan's Genroku era, during the reign of the shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, it follows two protagonists whose stories intertwine through destiny, demons and legendary cursed blades: Momohime, a princess possessed by the spirit of the rōnin Jinkuro Izuna, and Kisuke, an amnesiac ninja.

Combat focuses on skillful swordplay, combos and weapon management. Each character attacks and guards with a single button, and a Soul Power gauge breaks a blade when it runs dry, so precision and timing matter, while 108 swords to collect and forge offer a deep selection of unique abilities. The Rebirth version adds a new, more faithful English translation, visuals upgraded for the Vita's OLED screen and controls adjusted for the handheld, and it was followed by four Genroku Legends downloadable episodes with new music supervised by Hitoshi Sakimoto.

Exploration is half the pleasure. Momohime and Kisuke each have their own campaign across a side-scrolling map of old Japan's provinces, and each story has three endings to chase. Meals cooked from ingredients gathered on the road, modeled on delicacies of the 17th and 18th centuries, grant temporary boosts and are drawn with the loving detail Vanillaware's food is famous for, while the score, produced by Sakimoto with his Basiscape team, gives every province its own mood.

Highly regarded for its art direction, music and satisfying action, Muramasa Rebirth is considered one of the standout games on the PlayStation Vita, and a natural fit for a handheld that shows off some of the most beautiful 2D art of its generation.
