Item Description

For a new game to arrive on a physical Atari 2600 cartridge decades after the console's heyday is remarkable enough. For it to be a precision platformer that feels at home next to modern indie hits is something else. Mr. Run and Jump began in 2021 as the work of John Mikula of Graphite Lab, and in 2023 Atari released it as a 2600 cartridge, the first new Atari-published game on cartridge since 1990.

The story is wonderfully simple: Mr. Run and Jump has to rescue his dog, Leap, from the Dark Realm. Getting there means working through six worlds and 80 screens of tight, single-screen platforming built entirely within the limits of the original hardware. Movement is the whole challenge, with runs, leaps and narrow escapes that demand precise timing. The scoring gives it a speedrunner's edge: you start each run with 25,000 points that drain away with every passing second and every collision with an enemy, so mastery is about routes and efficiency as much as survival. It plays like a modern game wearing the 2600's chunky, colorful blocks.

Mr. Run and Jump also branched out into an expanded modern version, developed with Heavy Horse Games for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and the Atari VCS, but the 2600 cartridge is the version that connects it most directly to Atari's roots. It is a celebration of the homebrew scene's craft and Atari's renewed interest in its own history, and for a 2600 collector, the cartridge is a fitting piece of the console's unlikely second life.
