Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

The first time you hit a full loop at speed and come out the other side still upright, Motocross Maniacs clicks. Konami's dirt-bike racer looks simple on the surface, a side-scrolling sprint in the spirit of Excitebike, but the real game is in the air. Tilting the front wheel up or down sets your angle off every ramp and into every landing, and getting it wrong throws your rider off the bike and burns precious seconds.

Seconds are everything here. A meter that works as both fuel and clock drains as you ride, and the run ends the moment it empties, so every pickup that tops it up feels like a lifeline. Nitro canisters marked N give the short bursts you need to clear the biggest gaps and loops, and some stretches are nearly impossible without one, so hoarding and spending boosts becomes a puzzle of its own. The eight courses mix loops, ramps and long jumps with rougher ground that punishes a sloppy landing, and learning where to save a nitro is half the fun of replaying them.

A, B and C difficulty settings tune the challenge, and a versus mode puts a friend on the track with you over the link cable. Released in 1989 under Konami's Ultra Games label in North America, it was an early Game Boy hit and spawned Motocross Maniacs 2 on Game Boy Color and a Game Boy Advance follow-up. This is the original monochrome cartridge that started the series, and its blend of stunt timing and fuel management still makes a quick five-minute run hard to put down.
