Item Description

Mortal Kombat X has the swagger of a series that had just found its footing again. NetherRealm Studios' 2011 reboot brought back the brutality and the storytelling, and this 2015 sequel carried the franchise onto PlayStation 4 with a new generation of fighters, deeper customization and some of the most inventive Fatalities the series had produced.

The big idea is variations. Every fighter comes in three versions with different moves, weapons and play styles: Scorpion's Ninjutsu, Hellfire and Inferno variations each feel like a different character, and Sub-Zero can lean on ice clones or forge frozen weapons mid-fight. Picking a variation turns even a familiar mirror match into a guessing game. Interactive stages, carried over from NetherRealm's Injustice: Gods Among Us, let you bounce off walls or hurl objects mid-combo, a run meter returns from Mortal Kombat 4 to reward aggression, and the three-tier super meter powers enhanced specials, combo breakers and X-Ray moves.

The cinematic story mode follows Earthrealm's defenders against the fallen Elder God Shinnok, then hands the spotlight to their children: Cassie Cage, daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Jacqui Briggs, Takeda and Kung Jin. Newcomers such as the insectoid D'Vorah, the gunslinger Erron Black, the Aztec-inspired emperor Kotal Kahn and the tandem fighter Ferra/Torr gave the roster a fresh identity, while Brutalities returned as a flashy reward for finishing a round with style. Away from the fights, the Krypt returns as a first-person crawl through eerie locations packed with unlockable costumes, Fatalities and art, the kind of side attraction that keeps a fighting game in the console long after the story ends.

Mortal Kombat X reviewed well and sold strongly, and much of what Mortal Kombat 11 later refined started here, from the generational story to the idea of customizing how each fighter plays. Its offline towers and local versus still hold up beautifully on PS4, and Cassie Cage's debut as the series' new lead makes it the natural starting point for the next generation's saga.

About the game

Mortal Kombat X is the tenth main game in the one-on-one fighting series and a sequel to the 2011 title Mortal Kombat. The game stays close to the visual style and the mechanics of the 2011 reboot. The main controls are still based on two types of punches and kicks, and blocking, to form combos with uppercuts, teleports, special moves that incorporate weapons and fatalities. The three-tiered energy from the previous title returns, making available X-Ray moves, powered up EX moves and combo breakers. As introduced in Injustice: Gods Among Us, characters can use the environment to re-position themselves or optionally use parts as weapons. Each character now has three variations with different moves and weapons. There is once again a sprinting gauge, returning from Mortal Kombat 4.
