Item Description

In the opening moments of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Superman blasts Darkseid with heat vision as the villain flees through a Boom Tube, while in another reality Raiden strikes Shao Kahn with lightning, and the two tyrants fuse into a single monster, Dark Kahn. Their merging realities begin bleeding into each other, and suddenly Scorpion is trading blows with Batman. Midway's 2008 crossover is exactly as wild as that sounds, and more thoughtful than a simple mashup needed to be.

Each side fields ten fighters plus an unlockable boss. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang, Kitana, Sonya Blade, Jax, Baraka, Kano and Shang Tsung stand for Mortal Kombat, while Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel, Catwoman, the Joker, Lex Luthor and Deathstroke answer for DC, with Shao Kahn and Darkseid joining the roster once unlocked. The story mode is a real two-sided campaign, told chapter by chapter from both perspectives, which gives the clash of universes a backbone beyond novelty.

It plays closer to the classic 2D Mortal Kombat games than the multiple fighting styles of Deadly Alliance through Armageddon, putting special moves front and center. New ideas give it flavor: Klose Kombat zooms into a close-up exchange of blows, Free-Fall Kombat sends both fighters plummeting down a cliff trading hits all the way, and a Rage mode lets a fighter shrug off attacks for a few precious seconds. Test Your Might returns too. The DC license kept the rating at T, so the heroes perform Heroic Brutalities instead of killing, while Mortal Kombat's fighters and DC's villains keep their Fatalities.

It was the last Mortal Kombat Midway released before its bankruptcy, and its cinematic, chapter-based story mode and DC partnership pointed straight toward the team's later work on Mortal Kombat 9 and Injustice: Gods Among Us. The Greatest Hits label marks Sony's budget reissue for strong-selling PS3 games, fitting for a matchup so many players could not resist. For the sight of the Joker squaring off against Scorpion, there is nothing else like it on the console.

About the game

In this arcade-style fighting game, both DC and Mortal Kombat universes are represented by 10 champions each, and one "boss" character, for a total of 22 fighters. Play is similar to the 2D Mortal Kombat games (with some 3D elements), focusing more on the special move aspect than the complex combos found in the previous three games (Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon). As with any Mortal Kombat game, Fatalities are still present for the Kombatants and villains, though slightly toned down to meet the DC standards of heroes such as Superman and Batman keeping to their moral code and not killing their opponent. As a result, the DC heroes perform "Heroic Brutalities", which effectively put their opponent out of commission.
