What happens after the hero wins? Mortal Kombat 1 is the answer. At the end of Mortal Kombat 11, Liu Kang ascended to become the Fire God and took control of time itself, and this 2023 game from NetherRealm Studios is the universe he built from scratch. Old enemies are allies, friends have different histories, and every returning fighter gets to be new again, which is exactly what a series more than thirty years old needed.

The reimagined cast is the fun part. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are now brothers in the Lin Kuei clan, Raiden is a humble Earthrealm farmer chosen as Liu Kang's champion, Kitana and Mileena are sisters and princesses of Outworld, and Johnny Cage is a washed-up movie star desperate to stay relevant. The cinematic story mode, a NetherRealm specialty, ties those new versions together into a single sprawling plot and earned some of the strongest praise of any part of the game.

The fighting system was rebuilt too. Alongside your main character you choose a Kameo Fighter, a partner from a separate roster who can be called in mid-match to extend combos, break pressure or set up the next exchange, and that pairing turns every fight into a small strategic puzzle. Juggles and air combos have a bigger role than in recent entries, Fatal Blows return as comeback moves, and the Fatalities are as gleefully excessive as ever. For solo players there is Invasions, a seasonal board-game-style campaign of fights, challenges and mini-games, alongside arcade-style Towers.

On PlayStation 5, Mortal Kombat 1 is the place to begin the new timeline, the first chapter of an era NetherRealm later expanded with the Khaos Reigns story expansion. It rewards both the friend who just wants to see a Fatality and the player who wants to lab Kameo combos for hours.
