Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Mortal Kombat 3 took the fight out of the tournament and onto the streets. Shao Kahn has finally invaded Earth, merging it with Outworld and claiming nearly every soul on the planet, and only a handful of chosen warriors are left standing to stop him. That shift gave the third game its look: a ruined modern city of subways, streets, rooftops, graveyards and bell towers instead of the temples and pits of the earlier games.

The fighting got faster too. MK3 added a dedicated Run button, which pushed the series toward aggressive, rushing offense, and Dial-A-Combo strings, preset button chains that let practiced players link punches and kicks into brutal sequences. Some stages have more than one level, so a well-timed uppercut in the subway can send your opponent crashing through the ceiling onto the street above. Before a match, both players can punch in Vs. codes on the pre-fight screen to unlock hidden powers and tweaks, a feature that fed endless schoolyard rumors about what else might be hiding in the game.

The roster mixes returning fighters like Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya, Jax, Kano, Shang Tsung and a newly unmasked Sub-Zero with a wave of newcomers, among them the cyborg ninjas Cyrax and Sektor, Kabal, Nightwolf, Sindel, Sheeva and Stryker. The finishing-move menu grew as well, with Animalities and Mercy joining the Fatalities, Friendships and Babalities, and more stage fatalities on top. Waiting at the end are the four-armed centaur Motaro and Shao Kahn himself.

On the Genesis, Midway's sequel came home with its blood and finishers intact and with the speed and snap of the arcade game well preserved. It captures the series at the height of its mid-'90s moment, when Mortal Kombat was the fighting game every group of friends was arguing about, and it is a centerpiece for a Genesis fighting-game shelf.

About the game

Mortal Kombat 3 brings new elements to the 2D fighting series: multi-level playfields, "Dial-A-Combo" attacks, a "Run" button to speed up the battles, and "Vs." codes, which unlock new powers and abilities once both players enter a code sequence in pre-match-up screens. Also included are more stage fatalities and finishing moves as each warrior attempts to go one-on-one with the Centaurian enforcer Motaro, and Shao Kahn himself.
